This is my 7th quilt, and my first attempt at machine trapunto (using Hari Walner's wash away thread technique). It is blue and white and was made for our second son, Jamie's college graduation from Michigan Technological University. The appliqué was done by hand, and the quilting done on my Bernina 1230. For the close stippling I used a 60/2 Mettler Embroidery fine thread in both top and bottom. I also used 50/3 Mettler Silk Finish cotton thread to quilt the feathers. This work is all done freehand (the feed dog is dropped). I used YLI wonder invisible .004 thread to quilt around the blue designs. This quilt was a real challenge for me, because I never thought I could do a beautiful continuous reverse feather border and have it all come out like it should. The pattern is from "Great American Quilts" by Jean Lohmar, however it did not include a pattern for the feather design used in the border. So this forced me to figure out how to do a continuous feathered border. I used Hobbs Heirloom (80% poly 20% cotton) for the batting. For the trapunto I used Poly-Fil extra loft batting by Fairfield. It took over a year to make.

What a joy this quilt was to see hanging at "Quilt America - 2000", in Indianapolis Indiana in July where it had a beautiful Best Machine Quilting award, sponsored by Bernina of America, Inc.  Completed February 24, 2000.
